Tulak: Isang storya tungkol sa Droga

TulakTikboy (Rafael Rosell), is a typical young boy in a narrow alley called “Kalye Walang Buhay” (Dead Alley) where most of the residents are criminals, immorals, and drug dependents.  Orphaned at an early age, her aunt Lukray (Isabel Lopez), an aging prostitute took him under her wings with her live-in partner, Abdon (Julio Diaz), a low-ranking policeman, corrupt, fraudulent and a drug pusher. Tikboy serves as his delivery boy in most of his drug deals and identified as  “batang tulak”.

At the young age of 9, Tikboy was maltreated and abused by Abdon. Until such time when Tikboy badly hurt Abdon while saving his Aunt from being beaten, Lukray forced him to leave and find his life in the outside world.

Ten years later, Tikboy, a grown-up man, is released from jail with the help of Betina (Fanny Serrano), an old faggot who owns a small shell craft factory, a trusted and thoughtful friend and a shoulder to cry on – they’re codependent. Tikboy recalls his life after leaving the Dead Alley, he joined the pickpockets around the city. Soon he became a bandit and pusher.  Now as an ex-convict, all he wanted to do is to find his Aunt Lukray and save her from Abdon, but the Dead Alley where they used to dwell is already demolished.

Tikboy learned about a certain shabu tiangge at the center of a crowded slum area in a far district.  He was shocked and upset to see Lukray, glum, miserable and a full blown addict.  The people call her Lukring for being eccentric, her face filled with scars.  The place is a known haven for drug pushers and users.  Abdon, the owner and operator of the so-called shabu tiangge was evicted from his police service with several pending cases. Becoming a codependent of Lukray, he dangles shabu to her and the young addicts who drooled like rabid dogs at the sight of the evil powder.  The mad clients then resorted to stealing cell phones, probably even murder, in order to buy the drug—which only made them more criminally insane.   Tikboy wants to save his aunt from her insanity as well as save his old time friend Bernie, who is also very hooked on drugs.

Men and women, young and old, most people in this area are lured into drugs. As old as Andeng, (Rustica Carpio) a widow at 83 and as young as Bimbo an 8 year old boy, like him during his younger days, dealing and selling shabu.  Tikboy realizes the increasing number of victims of this stuff are quite disturbing selling shabu not only to the affluent but mostly to the poor.

During the finale, an intense action scene takes place when he tries to forcibly get his aunt away from Abdon.  During the chase, a heartrending moment between Lukray and Tikboy transpires when Lukring  finally recognized him. But Abdon gets shot and a stampede occurs in the shabu tiangge.

Tikboy chooses recovery, and takes along with him in this new journey his friends from the past.  There is healing, amends work and hope for a better tomorrow.  And yet, the struggle not to take that drug again, continuous.

Even if the fight against drugs may seem like a losing battle because of its massive network, its huge profits and colossal protectors who lack the will to end it, we must all do our part to stop it — first with ourselves, then with our families, then within our communities.  Our silence and our indifference makes us no different from any other “tulak” on the street.
